The law is the last result of human wisdom acting upon human experience for the benefit of the public.

— Samuel Johnson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most rules exist because something went wrong before, often repeatedly, and the rule is what was left after people worked out how to stop it happening again. That does not make every rule good; plenty outlive their reason or serve whoever wrote them. But a rule you find pointless usually had a cause, and the cause is worth finding before you remove it.

When a procedure irritates you this week, ask what it was built to prevent. If the answer is a real risk that still exists, keep it. If nobody can tell you the answer, that is your case for changing it, and a stronger one than annoyance.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rule did you resent until you learned why it existed?
