There are some reasoners who frequently confound innocence with the mere incapacity of guilt; but he that never saw, or heard, or thought of strong liquors, cannot be proposed as a pattern of sobriety.

LEADERSHIP
Not doing something you were never able to do is not a virtue. Restraint requires the possibility of the thing being restrained, which is why untested people are so easily mistaken for good ones and why they mistake themselves that way too. Plenty of reputations rest on nothing more than a lack of opportunity. The real test only arrives when the door is genuinely open.
Be careful about crediting yourself for temptations you have never faced. And be careful about judging someone who failed a test you have not sat. Ask instead where you have actually refused something you wanted, because that is the honest measure.
Which virtue of yours has never actually been tested?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
