Where necessity ends, curiosity begins; and no sooner are we supplied with everything that nature can command, than we sit down to contrive artificial appetites.

— Samuel Johnson

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Once your actual needs are covered, the wanting does not stop; it simply invents new objects. Comfort creates a vacancy, and something always arrives to fill it, usually something you had never heard of a year ago and now consider necessary. Part of that inventiveness is curiosity, which is a good thing and drives most of what humans make. The other part is restlessness dressed as need.

Take one recent want and trace where it came from. If you cannot remember wanting it before you saw it, wait a month before acting. Most manufactured appetites do not survive being ignored for that long.
