The state of that man’s mind who feels too intense an interest as to future events, must be most deplorable.

— Seneca

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Caring too much about how things will turn out is its own form of suffering, separate from whatever actually happens. The mind runs every version in advance, and each rehearsal costs something real while changing nothing about the outcome. Most of what is rehearsed never occurs, and the few things that do arrive rarely resemble the anticipated version.

You cannot argue yourself out of this, so it is usually better to give the mind something to hold. Do the one preparatory thing that is actually available, then put the matter down until there is news. If it keeps taking your nights, that is worth telling someone about.
