Power exercised with violence has seldom been of long duration, but temper and moderation generally produce permanence in all things.

— Seneca

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Anything held in place by force needs continuous force to stay there. Compliance produced by fear lasts exactly as long as the fear does, and it generates resentment that waits for the first chance to act. Arrangements that people actually accept require no maintenance of that kind, which is why they outlast the forceful ones even when they look weaker at the start.

Where you have been getting your way by pressure, at work or at home, ask what happens the day you stop pushing. If the answer is that everything reverts, the arrangement is not real. Trade some speed for agreement.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where would your restraint hold what force would only win briefly?
