Vanity makes men ridiculous, pride odious and ambition terrible.

REFLECTION
Three different sizes of self-regard, three different costs. Vanity is the smallest and the most survivable, since being caught admiring yourself only makes people laugh. Pride hardens into something people dislike rather than mock. Ambition is the one with reach, because it needs other people and their arrangements in order to get where it is going, which is why it does the actual damage.
Work out which of the three is yours, since almost everyone has a leaning. Then ask who would carry the cost if it went unchecked for a year. That answer tells you where to keep an eye.
Which flavour of self-regard gets you into the most trouble?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
