No sadder proof can be given by a man of his own littleness than disbelief in great men.

— Thomas Carlyle

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Refusing to believe anybody is genuinely admirable usually says more about the refuser. It arrives dressed as realism, and underneath it is often a wish that nobody be allowed to be larger than oneself, since if no one is any good then falling short of them costs nothing. The habit protects you and it also shuts the door on being changed by anyone.

Try allowing one person their quality this week without hunting for the flaw that cancels it. Say plainly what they did well, to them or to someone else. Admiring somebody does not diminish you, and the capacity to be impressed is most of what makes it possible to learn.
