Avoid shame, but do not seek glory,—nothing so expensive as glory.

— Sydney Smith

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Avoiding disgrace is cheap; chasing renown is not. Staying honest and doing your work properly requires no particular resources, and the protection it buys is real. Reputation of the larger kind has to be maintained, fed, defended and worried about, and it costs time, nerve and often the very things it was supposed to make possible.

Have a look at what you are currently paying for recognition. The hours spent on visibility rather than on the work, the invitations accepted for how they look, the anxiety after anything public. Keep the standards you would keep in private and let the rest of it be somebody else’s expense.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you paid for recognition that you would not pay again?
