Some might consider him as too fond of fame; for the desire of glory clings even to the best men longer than any other passion.

— Tacitus

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

The wish to be thought well of outlasts almost every other appetite. People who have let go of ambition, comfort and most of their vanities will still notice whether their name came up, and still feel the small lift when it did. It is nearly universal and it is not a defect, though it does need watching, because it is the one that stays.

Rather than pretending to be above it, keep track of where it steers you. Ask whether you took the project for the work or for the mention, and whether you would still want it if the credit went to somebody else. Occasionally choose the version where it does.
