Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em.

Standing arrives by three quite different routes, and only one of them involves your effort. Some people begin with it, some build it over years, and some have it dropped on them by circumstances they did not choose, which is more common than the first two and much less discussed. The third kind is the hardest, because you get the responsibility without any of the preparation.

If something large has landed on you unasked, treat the not having chosen it as a fact rather than a grievance, and ask what the position actually requires. Learn that, quickly and without apology. Nobody in the third category ever feels ready.
