Happy the people whose annals are blank in history-books.

— Thomas Carlyle

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

An uneventful stretch is a good one, and it rarely feels like anything at the time. The years that produce a story are usually the years something went badly wrong, and a life with nothing much to report has generally been getting on with what it wanted to do. Peace makes poor material and good living.

If your current season is unremarkable, resist the pull to treat that as stagnation. Notice what is quietly working: the health, the arrangement that holds, the people who are still here. And keep some record of it, since the calm years leave almost no trace and are the ones you will want to remember.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What is good about the years nothing dramatic happened to you?
