As the purse is emptied the heart is filled.

— Victor Hugo

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Money spent on someone else returns as something you cannot buy directly. The transaction feels like a loss on the way out and rarely feels like one afterwards, because what you get back is a change in how you stand towards the person and towards your own life. Hoarding produces the opposite: a fuller purse and a narrower set of feelings about it. The exchange rate is strange but reliable.

Give something away this week at a level you will actually feel, not the level that costs you nothing. It does not have to be money; time works, and so does help you would rather not give.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did giving away leave you feeling richer for?
