The Pyramids themselves, doting with age, have forgotten the names of their founders.

— Thomas Fuller

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

The monuments outlast the names, and usually by a wide margin. Enormous effort goes into being remembered, and what actually survives is the thing itself, standing there long after anyone can say who ordered it built or why. That is not a reason for despair; it just relocates the point of the work.

So aim at the effect rather than the credit, since the effect is the part with any chance of lasting. Ask what you are making that would still be useful with your name entirely detached from it. Then put your effort into making it good rather than making sure it is attributed.
