When the tongue or the pen is let loose in a frenzy of passion, it is the man, and not the subject, that becomes exhausted.

— Thomas Paine

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Letting fly at full heat feels like doing something about the problem, and it is not. The matter sits exactly where it was, unmoved by volume, while you are left emptied and often embarrassed. Force spent on expression is force not spent on the thing itself, and passion has a way of convincing you that the two are the same. The louder version also tends to be the one people remember.

When you feel the urge to fire off the message, write it and hold it until morning. Then ask what you actually want to change, and send only the part that could plausibly change it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you write in anger that only drained you?
