Without courage there cannot be truth, and without truth there can be no other virtue.

— Walter Scott

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Honesty is downstream of nerve. Knowing what is true costs nothing until saying it costs something, and at that moment the willingness to be disliked is the only thing standing between you and a convenient version of events. Everything else you might want to be depends on this, because kindness built on a false account is not kindness and loyalty to a lie is not loyalty.

Find the true sentence you have been declining to say and work out exactly what you are afraid it will cost. Often the cost is smaller and more survivable than the vagueness suggests. Say it to one person before the week is out.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What truth are you avoiding because saying it would cost something?
