To study and not think is a waste. To think and not study is dangerous.

— Confucius

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Taking in information without reflecting on it leaves you with facts you cannot use, like a library with no catalogue. Thinking without learning is riskier, because it produces confident conclusions built on too little knowledge, and those can mislead you and others. Each activity needs the other to be worth much.

Notice which way you lean. If you read a great deal but rarely connect it to your own life, stop after each chapter and write a sentence about what it means for you. If you form strong opinions quickly, find one serious source that challenges them before you speak.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are your opinions built on reading or only on your own reasoning?
