Everything in the universe goes by indirection. There are no straight lines.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Progress rarely travels the route it was planned on. Careers, friendships, recoveries and skills tend to arrive sideways, through a detour, a wrong job, a chance remark, and the path you draw in advance is a wish rather than a map. Judging your life against that imagined straight run makes ordinary movement look like failure.

When something is not going where you aimed it, ask what it is going toward instead before you correct course. Some of what looks like a detour is the only road there was.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which detour in your life turned out to be the route?
