Master enough basics that creativity can safely become ambitious.

CREATIVITY
Ambition in a craft rests on how much you can stop thinking about. When the fundamentals run without your attention, your mind is free to take real risks, because you can catch yourself if a risk goes wrong. Without that base, an ambitious idea becomes a mess you cannot rescue, and the failure teaches you very little except that you should not have tried. The basics are not the opposite of creativity. They are the safety net beneath it.
Look at the ambitious thing you keep failing to pull off and ask which underlying move you have not truly automated. Drill that one piece until it is dull. Then attempt the bold version again, and notice how much more attention you have left over for the interesting decisions.
Which fundamentals would free you to attempt something more ambitious?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
