Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.

— Arthur Schopenhauer

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you cannot see does not register as missing; it simply does not exist for you. That is why everyone’s personal horizon feels like the edge of reality. Your job, your town, your social circle and your era all set boundaries on what seems possible or normal, and from inside they are invisible. Other people are working inside different horizons, which explains much of why they can seem baffling.

When you find yourself sure that something is impossible or that nobody thinks a certain way, treat it as a hint about your vantage point. Seek out one person or source from well outside your usual view, and listen without rebutting.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you called impossible that others do routinely?
