As reason is a rebel to faith, so passion is a rebel to reason.

— Sir Thomas Browne

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The mind is rarely one unified thing. Careful thinking pushes against deep trust, questioning what cannot be proved, and strong feeling pushes against careful thinking, overriding it just when it is most needed. In that picture each part rebels against the one set over it, which is why inner conflict is normal rather than a sign of failure.

When you face a decision this week, try to notice which voice is speaking. Is this a feeling looking for a reason, or a reason arguing with something you trust? Naming the rebellion does not settle it, but it makes the decision less murky.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did feeling overrule a decision you had carefully reasoned?
