Truth is the property of no individual but is the treasure of all men.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nobody owns what is true. A discovery, an insight, a correct account of events belongs to everyone the moment it is seen, whoever saw it first. Treating truth as a possession to guard, a winning card in an argument or a secret held for advantage, misunderstands what it is for.

When you learn something important this week, look for someone who needs it too. And when someone else is right, especially someone you dislike, try to receive the truth without resenting where it came from. Its value does not depend on who delivers it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you argue to win rather than to understand?
