You do not need to become arrogant to stop being available for disrespect.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a common fear that holding a line makes you difficult, so people stay endlessly accommodating to avoid becoming someone they would not like. But arrogance and self-respect are not on the same scale at all. Arrogance is a claim about being better than others. Declining disrespect is only a statement about what you will take part in, and it can be done kindly and without raising your voice.

The next time you are treated poorly, try a plain and unheated response rather than either a fight or a silence. Simply saying you would rather not be spoken to that way is usually enough. Notice that you did not have to become anyone unpleasant to say it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you tolerated rudeness because refusing it felt harsh?
