Respect yourself enough to make difficult corrections without public humiliation.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Publicly punishing yourself can feel like accountability, but often it is a performance that trades real repair for the appearance of it. The confession in front of others, the loud self-criticism, the announcement of the new regime. Meanwhile the actual correction, which is usually quiet and unglamorous, does not get made. You can hold yourself to account without putting yourself in the stocks.
When you next get something wrong, make the apology to whoever was affected and skip the wider announcement. Then change the specific thing. If nobody else ever learns about the correction, that is a sign it was for the right reasons.
How harshly do you speak to yourself after a mistake?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
