Hope is the only universal liar who never loses his reputation for veracity.

— Robert Green Ingersoll

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Hope promises outcomes that often do not come, and yet people keep believing it the next time. That is not simple foolishness. Hope earns its trust by what it does rather than by being right: it gets people out of bed, keeps them trying, and makes hard stretches bearable even when the promised ending never arrives.

You may conclude that this makes hope untrustworthy, and in a narrow sense it is. The useful move is to take its energy while holding its forecasts loosely. Let hope carry you through the effort, but make your plans on the evidence.
