Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect and passion in their operation.

— John Ruskin

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Real ability is not one ingredient but three working at once: the hours you have logged, the understanding you have built, and the fact that you care how it turns out. Remove any of them and the result is recognisable. Hours without care become competent and lifeless, care without hours stays amateur, and understanding without either never leaves the page.

Work out which of the three is thinnest in the thing you most want to be good at. That is where the next stretch of effort belongs. Adding more of what you already have plenty of feels productive and changes little.
