The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Novelty is easy to notice; the ordinary takes a trained eye. Light coming through a window, a child learning a word, bread rising: such things are extraordinary, but we stop seeing them because they happen every day. Wisdom, on this account, is partly a matter of attention, of refusing to let familiarity make the world dull.

Pick one routine part of today and look at it as if you had never encountered it. Ask how it works, or how improbable it is that it happens at all. A few minutes of that kind of attention can change how the rest of the day feels.
