The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.

— Cicero

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

When someone dies, they continue in the minds and stories of those who knew them. Their influence, habits and way of seeing things live on in how the living remember and carry them. That can be a comfort, and it is also a gentle responsibility, since how they are remembered now rests partly with you.

If you are grieving, you may find it helps to keep their presence alive in ordinary ways: saying their name, telling their stories, doing something the way they used to. There is no right amount of remembering. Some days will be full of them, and some days quieter, and both are fine.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whom do you keep alive by remembering them out loud?
