The soul without imagination is what an observatory would be without a telescope.

— Henry Ward Beecher

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

A person with no capacity to picture what is absent has the apparatus and no way to use it. All the depth in the world is inert without the instrument that lets it reach past the immediate. Imagination is not decoration; it is what makes anything distant available at all.

If your life has narrowed to whatever is directly in front of you, that is usually exhaustion rather than character. Read something unlike your usual, or spend an hour on a question with no practical use. The instrument responds to being used more than to being repaired.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you stopped picturing because daily life crowded it out?
