Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.

— Robert Louis Stevenson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Nobody chooses the hand, and the differences between hands are enormous and unfair; pretending otherwise is a way of blaming people for their deal. What stays within reach is the playing: what you do with the health, money, family and luck you actually got. That is a smaller domain than the motivational version claims and a much larger one than despair claims.

Make the distinction explicit this week. List what is fixed and what is still yours to decide, honestly, inflating neither column. Then spend your energy entirely on the second list.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you doing well with the hand you were dealt?
