Good courage in a bad affair is half of the evil overcome.

— Plautus

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Half of what makes a bad situation unbearable is the flinching: the dread, the avoidance, the hours spent not looking at it. Meeting it directly changes none of the facts, but it removes that second layer, which is frequently the heavier of the two. People often discover the thing itself was manageable and the anticipation was not.

When something bad is underway, go and get the full information instead of rationing it to yourself. Say out loud what the genuine worst case is. Then deal with the situation you actually have, which is sometimes smaller than the one you were carrying and, even when it is not, is at least one you can see.
