A good problem solver does not fall in love with the first solution.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The first solution you think of has a strong advantage that has nothing to do with quality, which is that it is yours and it arrived first. Once you are attached, every subsequent thought goes into defending it rather than testing it, and you stop noticing the simpler option sitting nearby. Holding it loosely for a while is what keeps your judgment available.

Make yourself produce two more options before evaluating the first. They can be bad. The point is to break the attachment early, so that when you do choose, you are choosing rather than justifying.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which idea are you defending because it was yours first?
