Ignorance and bungling with love are better than wisdom and skill without.

— Henry David Thoreau

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Competence without care produces something technically correct that nobody enjoys being on the receiving end of. The clumsy version done by somebody who actually cares tends to land better, because the care shows in the details and because the recipient can tell which they are getting. Skill is the easier of the two to acquire.

That is no licence to stay bad at things, and having both is obviously better. Where it helps is when you are hesitating because you would do it badly: the meal, the letter, the visit to somebody ill. Do the clumsy version. It will be received as what it is.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who helped you clumsily and meant every bit of it?
