The art of life is to know how to enjoy a little and to endure very much.

— William Hazlitt

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of any life is made of the parts you get through rather than the parts you savour. Two skills are wanted at once: taking real pleasure in something small without needing it to be more than it is, and carrying the long stretches without letting them sour you. Neither half works alone. Endurance with no enjoyment turns to grimness, and enjoyment with no endurance collapses the first time things get heavy.

None of that is an argument for accepting less than you should. It is worth knowing which of the two you are weaker at, and practising that one deliberately this week.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What small pleasure keeps you going through a long hard stretch?
