The best way to know God is to love many things.

— Vincent van Gogh

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Devotion runs outward here rather than upward. Instead of reaching for the highest thing directly, you get at it by caring about a great many particular things: a river, a craft, a difficult friend, the light in late afternoon. Attention to the specific turns out to be the training ground for whatever larger thing you are after, and it works the same way whether or not you give that thing a name.

Widen the range of what you let yourself care about. Loving many things is not dilution, it is practice. Start with one you have neglected because it seemed too small to matter.

What have you let yourself love widely and without measure?
