Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.

— Martin Luther

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every act aimed at a future contains a bet that the future will arrive. Sowing seed, studying for years, starting a business, raising a child: none of it makes sense without an unproved assumption that things will continue and that effort will connect to outcome. Hope is not an ornament on action, it is the precondition.

If you have gone flat and nothing seems worth beginning, that may be the missing piece rather than laziness. Look for the smallest thing you can still believe will work, and do that one. Capacity for larger bets tends to return once the small ones pay out.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you starting on the strength of hope alone?
