Better the rudest work that tells a story or records a fact, than the richest without meaning.

— John Ruskin

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Polish is the easiest quality to acquire and the least valuable on its own. Something clumsy that carries a real observation outlasts something immaculate carrying nothing, because people return to what tells them something and not to what merely looks finished. Craft starts to matter once there is a reason for the object to exist. Without that, skill is expensive decoration.

Look at whatever you are making and ask what a stranger would learn from it. If the honest answer is nothing, further refinement will not help. Find the fact or the story first, then let the rough version go out carrying it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rough thing you made still says something true?
