There are times when fear is good. It must keep its watchful place at the heart’s controls.

— Aeschylus

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Fear is equipment rather than a malfunction. It reads a situation faster than deliberate thought and has kept people alive for a very long time, so the aim is not to remove it but to give it the right seat, advisory rather than in command. Somebody with no fear is not brave, only badly informed.

Notice which of your fears are doing useful work and which have outlived their occasion. The first kind deserves a hearing before you act. The second kind can be thanked and overruled, and telling them apart is most of the skill.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your fears has kept you sensibly out of trouble?
