To think ill of mankind and not wish ill to them, is perhaps the highest wisdom and virtue.

— William Hazlitt

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Seeing people clearly, including the mean and self-serving parts, usually collapses into either denial or contempt. The harder position holds both at once: no illusions about what people are capable of, and no wish to see them punished for it. That combination is rare because disappointment hardens so naturally into judgement.

Test it on somebody who has actually let you down. You can keep an accurate account of what they did, stop relying on them in that way, and still not want their life to go badly. Adjusting your expectations rather than your goodwill is the move.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Can you be kind to people you have low expectations of?
