Truth may be stretched, but cannot be broken, and always gets above falsehood, as does oil above water.

— Miguel de Cervantes

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A distorted account can be bent a long way before it snaps, but it stays under the surface of what actually happened. Falsehood needs constant maintenance; the truth needs none, and given enough time it simply rises. That is a claim about durability rather than speed, and the waiting can be long enough to feel like defeat.

If you are being misrepresented, the temptation is to fight on the same terms and at the same volume. Usually a better use of the time is to keep a plain record and behave consistently. Both of those work quietly, and they are still working after the noise has moved on.
