There is no remedy for love but to love more.

— Henry David Thoreau

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Treating affection as an affliction to be reduced tends not to work, since trying to care less usually just adds shame to the caring. The move suggested instead is going further in rather than backing out, which sounds like the wrong prescription and is often the only one that shifts anything. Withdrawal preserves the ache and gets you nothing else.

This is not encouragement to pursue somebody who has said no, or to pour more into someone who treats you badly, and that is worth stating plainly. Loving more can mean loving more widely: when one attachment aches, turning warmth toward friends, family and the work in front of you often eases it better than trying to feel nothing. Offer a little more than feels comfortable to people who can receive it and see what comes back.
