It is in the character of very few men to honor without envy a friend who has prospered.

— Aeschylus

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Congratulating someone whose good news costs you nothing is easy. The test comes when their success lands in the exact place you wanted for yourself, and something narrow moves in you before generosity has time to arrive. Feeling it does not make you a bad friend; acting on it, by going quiet or finding the flaw in their news, is where the damage starts.

When the pang comes, name it privately and then do the generous thing anyway, in specific terms rather than general ones. Say what you admired. Envy tends to shrink when it is looked at and to spread when it is denied.
