Reason and judgment are the qualities of a leader.

— Tacitus

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Charisma is the quality people notice and judgement is the one they end up depending on. Leading is mostly decision-making: the same information everybody else has, sorted better, with the emotion held back far enough to see the situation clearly. That is undramatic, and it is what actually keeps a group out of harm.

If you lead anything, look at how your decisions get made rather than how they get announced. Do you gather dissent before you commit, and can the quietest person in the room reach you. Judgement is not a personality trait; it is a process you either run or skip.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last decide something calmly while others were reacting?
