As soon as there is life there is danger.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Risk is not a condition you can finish removing; it is the price of being an animate thing at all. Every arrangement that reduces one exposure creates another, and a life narrowed enough to feel safe has traded its danger for a different one that is harder to see. Nothing available to you is actually risk-free.

That reframes the usual question. Instead of asking how to avoid danger, ask which risks are worth carrying and which you have accepted without noticing. The second list is normally longer, and moving one item from it onto the first is most of what people mean by living deliberately.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What risk comes with the life you have chosen to live?
