Most days nobody is expecting anything special from you, and those days are where your actual reputation gets built. What you produce when nothing is riding on it is what people encounter most often, and it forms their sense of what you are. The showpiece occasions matter much less than the accumulation of ordinary ones.

Rather than saving your effort for the visible moments, put a little more into an unremarkable piece of work this week. Nobody will comment. It still changes the average, and the average is what you are known by.
