The chief duty of government is to keep the peace and stand out of the sunshine of the people.

— James A. Garfield

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Keeping order and then getting out of the way are two different duties, and the second is the one usually neglected. Any body with authority expands into the space it governs, adding rules, requiring reports, casting a shadow over the ordinary activity it was meant to protect. Restraint is harder than intervention because it looks like doing nothing.

If you run anything, a team, a household, a committee, ask what you are blocking the light from. The test is whether people can get on with things without checking in. Removing one requirement is often worth more than adding a good idea.
