Your standard becomes real when inconvenience tests it.

Anyone can maintain a standard when it is convenient. What tells you whether it is real is what happens when holding it means a longer day, an awkward conversation, or missing something you wanted. The standard that survives that is a standard. The one that does not was a preference all along, which is fine to know as long as you know it.
Notice the next time keeping your standard would cost you something. That moment is the test rather than an exception to it. Paying the price once usually settles the question for a long while.
When did keeping your standard last cost you something?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
