Success is counted sweetest by those who never succeed.

— Emily Dickinson

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Desire sharpens the taste of a thing far more than possession does. The person outside the door can describe exactly what is behind it, in detail the people inside stopped noticing years ago. That is partly a consolation for whoever is still outside, and partly a warning to whoever got in, since the sweetness they imagined was manufactured by the distance.

If you are still reaching, take seriously that you can see the value clearly right now, and let that sharpen the effort rather than only the ache. If you have arrived, ask an outsider what they envy about your position and find out what you have gone blind to.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Why does the thing you never got still pull at you?
