Science is but an image of the truth.

— Francis Bacon

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A model is a picture, and pictures leave things out. The most rigorous account of anything is still a representation built with the instruments and assumptions available at the time, which is why it improves rather than finishes. Mistaking the picture for the thing itself is the error, whoever commits it.

None of that licenses dismissing careful work in favour of a hunch, since a good image beats no image by a wide margin. It is a reason to ask of any confident explanation what it was built to capture and what it was never designed to see. Hold it firmly and lightly at the same time.
