Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.

— Gustave Flaubert

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Originality is expensive, and ordinary structure is what pays for it. When sleep, meals and the shape of your day are already decided, you spend no attention on them, and the attention you save goes to the work you actually care about. Disorder in the small things rarely makes anyone more inventive; it just leaves you tired in the hours when you need nerve.

Pick the two or three decisions you remake every day and settle them once. A fixed start time, a standing meal, a walk at the same hour. Spend what that frees on the work that deserves some risk.
