Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.

— Jean de La Fontaine

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Appearance is the fastest information available about a person, and speed is exactly why it misleads. You form a verdict in the first second and then spend the rest of the encounter collecting evidence for it. What someone wears, how they carry themselves, how easily they speak: none of it reaches the part of them that would actually matter to you. It is not a habit you break once, since it reappears with every new face.

Pick one person this week you had already quietly filed away. Ask them something you would only ask someone you took seriously, and listen to the whole answer.
